Two Actions You Should Know About

Coming up this week are two actions
that you might consider supporting or joining.

The first is an exciting movement by children—a strike for action on climate change. It is being supported by many parents and children in our congregation. The kids will skip school this Friday, with their parents’ permission. Many will attend a climate rally in Philadelphia. Here’s the detail:

Youth Climate Strike

Our children and youth are interested in participating in the Youth Climate Strike which is taking place in the United States and all over the world on March 15. Originally we hoped to have a strike in Delaware. This is happening too quickly for us to arrange a local strike though.

Instead, we will join the Youth Climate Strike in Philadelphia at Love Park. The strike is from 12:00 pm – 2:30 pm. We will carpool or rent a van depending on the number of children, youth, and adults who plan to accompany us.

This is an actual STRIKE. Children and Youth are striking by not attending school.

For more information about the Youth Climate Strike check out:

Here are the details (as sent by Catherine Williamson to the CYRE email list):

  • First U will be open for children and youth at 8:00 am.
  • Make signs to take with us. 8:00 am – 10:00 am.
  • Leave for Love Park in Philadelphia around 10:15 am
  • Return to First Unitarian Church around 3:30 pm
  • First U will be open for children and youth until 5:45 pm, as needed.
  • Everyone is asked to bring a lunch and refillable water bottle. (If you are unable to provide your child/youth with a lunch, please contact Catherine Williamson and the church will provide a lunch.)
  • Please RSVP by Wednesday, March 13 at 12:00 pm.
  • Please fill out and bring the permission form.

Please dress for the weather! If it rains, feel free to send a change of clothing for when we return to church.

If you would like to contribute to helping our children and youth get to Philadelphia please make checks payable to First Unitarian Church and in the memo put Youth Climate March.

The second action is a canvas for the Smart Justice Campaign. The Unitarian Universalist Delaware Advocacy Network asks you to participate in a door-to-door canvas on Sunday, March 17, starting at the Elsmere Library. Here’s more about this action and how to participate.

Canvas Launch for Smart Justice

A robust package of justice reform legislation should be introduced shortly in the General Assembly. Network Delaware, the ACLU and other groups have organized a door to door canvasing campaign to support this legislation:

Sunday, March 17, 2019 at 3 PM – 6 PM EDT
Elsmere Library, 30 Spruce Avenue, Elsmere, DE 19805

Support the Campaign for Smart Justice and canvas to end the era of mass incarceration. Whether you’re an experienced canvasser, or doing it for the first-time, they’ll have the materials, training and food/drink to help you make an impact in getting folks involved!  This is the first in a series of canvassing in multiple locations across Delaware.

Also, don’t forget to sign the Petition for Smart Justice.

  1. This is really great and really impressive.  FYI, I’m scheduled to teach a course, “Climate Change, National Security, and Peace” at UD (GEOG367-010, POSC367-010) next fall. Hats off to your work!! Nancy
